TOMBOY, due to be published in Spring 2020 from Hachette Books, traces the trajectory of tomboys, from a Victorian ideal to a twenty-first-century fashion statement, from an American childhood phase to a vibrant sexuality and gender identity, and from a way of being a girl to a way of reinventing girlhood, from the 500 years since the word was introduced until its recent retreat in the American lexicon. It celebrates those who cast off the literal and figurative corsets of girlhood and places tomboys in the context of new understandings of gender.
